Dobrodošli u Zadar
Already in 1990, at the very first Ecker 1000-Miles-Race, Zadar was the starting point for the Ecker Cup. Only during the chaos of war in former Yugoslavia from 1991 to 1994 the race was not started in Zadar. In all the years the Tankerkomerc Marina Zadar presented itself as a reliable and very helpful partner in the preparation and execution of the 1000 Miles Race.
It was and is not easy for the relatively small Tankerkomerc Marina Zadar to accommodate the ever-growing field of starters, nonetheless the directors mr. Miljenko Dunatov and Budislav Taras and their team succeeded to present a perfectly prepared Marina.
Also the perfect organization of the opening ceremony, with all its past and future highlights gives us reason to include a very big thank to Mr. Dunatov and Mr. Taras.
2012, Zadar will be again the starting point of the now legendary Ecker 1000-Miles-Race and we can all look forward to a perfectly prepared marina and a spectacular opening ceremony.
Kalimera Kalamata!
The large tourist crowds will possibly stay away in 2012 also in the region of Kalamata. The greater the joy that about 500 sailors on more than 70 yachts will be staying in the course of our 1000 Miles Race for a few days in Kalamata.
Although late in the evening, the director of the Marina Kalamata, Mr. Vangelis Kakavogiannis took time to dine with the especially from Austria and Athens travelled Ecker Yachting delegation to answer first questions.
The many more subsequent discussions with Vangelis Kakavogianis were all influenced by friendly and positive atmosphere. We can look forward to great support from the local marina and the yacht club.
Also the conversation with the mayor, Mr. Panagiotis E. Nikas, was positive and we would like to thank the Mayor and the Municipality of Kalamata at this point for their great support.
Of course, it cannot be done without bureaucracy, as we will arrive from a third country. The competent authorities however are being very cooperative and friendly. To facilitate matters for all concerned, however some preparations are necessary. You will soon receive mail from us cocerning this topic.
News from Alanya
To get answers to the manifold open questions, a 4-member delegation of Ecker Yachting was on site in the destination Alanya and - this much can already be said without reservation: the support of authorities, municipality and marina is enormous and the thrill of the anticipation for our arrival is huge.
All conversations with the mayor of Alanya, Mr. Hasan SİPAHİOĞLU and the Marina Director Mr. Savas AYAS were positive and cordial.
Of course, the entry into Turkey in also Alanya not without bureaucracy, but also here the good will of the authorities and the support of the Marina management and their agents is secured.
In order to minimize the burden for the Turkish authorities and all regatta participants, some preparations are necessary. All registered regatta participants will receive a notice from us shortly, which will explain exactly what we need exactly in advance of them.
So nothing will stand in the way of a glittering feast for the award ceremony at the end of the 12th Ecker 1000 Miles Race in Alanya.

NEW REGATTA DESTINATION FIXED
As we have informed you some time ago, our fears that the new marina in Limassol won't be completed in time until October 2012, have become true now.
Despite major attempts by the Cypriot Tourist Association we have failed to find an adequate destination on the sun-island of Cyprus.
For some time now we were therefore already in close contact with the heads of Marina Alanya, which was completed in 2010.
After several conversations with Mr. Hasan Kaçmaz, the Coordinator and head of the Marina Alanya we have now received the final commitment.
All persons responsible in Alanya are looking forward to welcome us in our new destination, the Marina in Alanya in October 2012.
We are confident that with Alanya we have found an attractive destination and we look forward to an exciting 1000 Miles Race 2012, which will find a worthy finish in the Marina Alanya.
Equipment requirements
As already in the last 1000 Miles Race in 2007, there are numerous rules by the Croatian authorities, for charter and private yachts sailing under Croatian flag.
All yachts chartered with Ecker Yachting comply with these rules!
If you have chartered a yacht from one of our competitors, please get in touch with your contractual partner in time so as to ensure that the contract requirements are met, or will be met.
- The yacht must be built according to design category A (according to EU Directive 94/25/EC); The rescue equipment must comply fully with the requirements of navigation area III (IIa);
- All persons on board must have room in the life raft;
- Radio and navigation equipment must be in full compliance with the requirements of navigation area III (IIa)
- All yachts must be equipped with a GPS connected and pre-programmed GMDSS marine radio and must have an MMSI number.
- The yacht must registered in the Croatian Yacht Register (HRB);
- It must be ensured that all previously identified deficiencies have been remedied;
For yachts, which were rented from other charter companies, we can for obvious reasons not assume liability, if any of the above mentioned points are not met and if therefore the yacht will not be approved for the event by the Croation Yacht Register.
The responsible Croation Yacht Register will undertake an extraordinary review of all participating yachts sailing under Croatian flag approximately one month before the start of the race.
The charter company must be informed by you about the fact that this extraordinary review is mandatory, and he must arrange an appointment with the Croatian ship register for the review. For understandable reasons we cannot cover costs accruing in the course of the review.
Should the review not take place, we do NOT assume any responsibility for ensuring that the yacht will receive a permission and we are not liable for any resulting costs therefrom.
Yachts sailing under foreign (non-Croatian) flag are not affected by these rules!
Limassol as destination questionable!
Dear Regatta community,
Signs that despite all the concessions of the marina in Limassol in Cyprus, due to continuing difficulties can not be completed until early autumn 2012 and that we are therefore forced to change to another destination increase significantly!
As an alternative to Cyprus, we have envisaged two new destinations.
- Beirut / Lebanon
- Alanya / Turkey
Beirut, often referred to as Paris of the Middle East, qualifies as destination due to its exotic flair as out of Arabian Nights.
What makes us think, however, is that the route would be extended by another 150 nm and the politically tense situation throughout the whole region.
For Alanya as destination speaks that with its location in eastern Turkey it is as exotic as it is oriental, that the route would not be extended and that Turkey is at the moment the politically most stable country in the region.
We continue to be in close contact with the leaders of the marina in Limassol, the Cyprus Tourism Organization and the authorities.
In addition, we are in contact with the relevant marina managers of the two new destinations and the authorities of both countries. We work at full speed to reach a decision not later than January 30th 2012.
We will inform you here as well as with our Regatta newsletters about the facts and about our decisions.

GPS Tracking
GPS Tracking
For the Ecker 1000 Miles Race 2012, all participating yachts and escort ships will be equipped with GPS trackers which transmit the position data of the participants at regular intervals via satellite. Because of the satellite transmission 100% coverage is provided along the entire route.
The current positions of the participating yachts are displayed on a public website. Each participant and all other interested observers can view the current position of all participants via internet.
The link to this site will be announced in due time before the start.
Additionally, the trackers transmit to the race committee in real time and precisely to the second all engine and transmission data, as well as the engine operating time with engaged gear.
This eliminates the extremely time and personnel consuming reading, analysis and "edging“ of the black boxes at start, stopover and finish.
Yardstick versus ORC Club
Since the first Ecker 1000 Miles Race from Zadar to Alexandria in 1990, the topic of a most fair and transparent remuneration system for the participating yachts has been accompanying us.
Again and again doubts came up whether the yard stick system were the best and most fair compensation system.
For several years now, most regattas in the Mediterranean are held according to ORC-Club as a simplified handicap system based on ORC INTERNATIONAL.
The measurement rules are laid out in the International Measurement System (IMS), the calculation of handicaps is based on the rules of ORC-INTERNATIONAL (ORC-INT) and ORC-CLUB.
We always have been very keen to make all our decisions as transparent as possible - especially in the Ecker 1000 Miles Race. Therefore, we invite you to vote on which remuneration system should be used in the 1000 Miles Race 2012.

Stopover in Kalamata
So far, all conversations with representatives of the Municipality of Kalamata and with the responsible representatives of the Port Authority and the Director of the Marina have been very positive.
Both the municipal as well as the other authorities and the marina managers are very open-minded and would like to see the regatta fleet coming for a stopover to Kalamata.
In the western part of the harbor berths with sufficient water depth and in the required number are available.
So Kalamata as stopover for the Ecker 1000 Miles Race 2012 seems to be fixed.
